The Rutherford Bench, a geographically defined area within the larger Rutherford AVA in Napa Valley, is renowned for producing some of the region's most exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Its unique terroir, characterized by gravelly, well-drained soils with a distinctive "dusty" quality, plays a crucial role in shaping the character of these wines. These soils naturally limit yields, leading to smaller berries with concentrated flavors and intense aromas. The Rutherford Bench's warm days and cool nights contribute to the development of ripe fruit flavors, such as black currant, plum, and cassis, while preserving crucial acidity. These factors, combined with meticulous vineyard management, result in Cabernet Sauvignons that are powerful yet elegant, with firm tannins, complex flavors, and remarkable aging potential. Beyond its Cabernet Sauvignon, the Rutherford Bench also excels in producing other Bordeaux varieties, like Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which often contribute to exceptional blends.

The Rutherford Bench

95 Points Jonathan Cristaldi

A truly exceptional Cabernet vintage in Rutherford hinges on several factors coming together. Beyond favorable weather, optimal soil conditions play a critical role. Rutherford's gravelly, well-drained soils naturally limit yields, leading to more concentrated flavors in the grapes. The 2023 vintage benefited from these soil characteristics, allowing the vines to thrive and produce high-quality fruit. Furthermore, meticulous vineyard practices, such as canopy management and precise harvest timing, were essential for maximizing the potential of our Rutherford Cabernets. When all these elements align – favorable weather, ideal soil, and skilled vineyard management – the result is a Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional quality, exhibiting the classic Rutherford character of rich, complex flavors, firm tannins, and remarkable aging potential.

2023 VINTAGE RUTHERFORD, NAPA VALLEY

94 Points Jonathan Cristaldi

The 2023 vintage in Napa Valley is being viewed as an excellent year for Cabernet Sauvignon. Favorable weather patterns during key periods of the growing season, including bud break, flowering, and veraison, added to the development of the grapes to their full "Rutherford" potential. While some heat spikes occurred, they were generally short-lived and didn't cause widespread damage. This balanced weather, combined with diligent vineyard management, allowed for even ripening and developing of concentrated flavors in our grapes. Specifically in Rutherford, known for its "dusty" tannins and classic Cabernet character, 2023 delivered the conditions for producing wines with great structure and aging potential. The warm days and cool nights typical of Rutherford contributed to the development of ripe fruit flavors while preserving crucial acidity.
